20 - Making Money Selling Other People's Products

Making money selling other people's products is usually referred to as affiliate marketing.  This is fast becoming a popular way to start an online business without a large upfront investment of money, or having to deal with bulky equipment and a large amount of inventory. Because affiliate marketing is mostly about promotion, you don't have to concern yourself with filling orders or shipping out the product.

Getting started with affiliate marketing is very simple. Once you identify the affiliate products you want to sell, and you sign up with the affiliate marketing programs, all you have to do is find ways to market the product and make sales. One way to do this is to create a website that focuses on a topic that relates to the product you're selling. For instance, if you're selling a candy dispenser, you set up a website about candy and anything else that relates to the product you're trying to sell. On the website itself visitors will be able to click on a link directing them to the website of the product you're hoping they buy. Every time you make a sale, you earn a small commission. Most affiliate programs store cookies on the computers of each visitor, so even if the person doesn't make a purchase right away, and comes back a few days later, you don't lose out on your commission. If the customer purchases more than one item, you can make even more money.

For those of you who already have a website, affiliate marketing is easy to integrate into your existing site. This is a great way to make some extra money on the side, and capitalize on the amount of traffic you've built up over time. Some affiliate marketing programs don't approve of every website that applies, however, there are many that accept applicants automatically.

When you sign up you're given a code that's attached to your website and tracks the visitors that purchase the product through your links. You get a commission every time a sale is made. Most ads are either plain text ads or contain graphics and come directly from the affiliate marketing company. Each text link or banner ad contains the special code identifying you as the source of the sale. This is how the affiliate company keeps track of your commissions.
