For most offline business owners, the transition to the world of online commerce can be a difficult one. Most proprietors of traditional bricks and mortar stores have no clue how to conduct a marketing campaign on the Internet. In fact, there are a few common mistakes that offline stores make the first time they create a website. Unfortunately, these mistakes usually drive customers away rather than get them to purchase the product or service being sold.
In the real world, a customer may drive by your store, see the colorful signs on your storefront, and decide to come in and take a look around. Once they're in the store, they have made a small commitment to stay and check out what you have to offer. It's less likely at this point in time that they will turn around and leave. Plus, now it's easy for staff members to approach a customer and convince them that they should buy something from the store. This just doesn't happen with online commerce.
When a customer visits a website, it's easy for them to become distracted and start browsing somewhere. If nothing compelling makes them stay on a particular site, they will move on very quickly. That's why it's extremely important for online stores to put their most important information right on the front page. Tell customers why they should buy your product! What makes you stand out from the crowd?
This technique, in fact, is the exact opposite of what you do outside of the Internet. In a traditional store, for example, sale items are placed at the back so that customers can walk towards them as they make their way through the store. On the Internet, however, sale items should be placed on the front page so that they are the first items that people see when they visit your site. When people come to the website and see that there's a sale going on, they'll be enticed to stick around for awhile and find out what else your selling.
An organized and well laid out website is also important. Refrain from using ugly blinking lights or anything that may turn customers off. Let visitors know that you are a trustworthy store selling high quality items. First impressions are important when you have a website, so make sure you take the time to find out how online commerce differs from offline endeavors.
